There is an increasing interest in adopting landscape approaches to sustainability. One approach is called SLM or sustainable landscape management. SLM is a key concept under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. It is also being adopted by the World Bank and others in new programmes of development assistance.

Francis Vorhies has been assisting the Global Mechanism, the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development and the World Bank in developing a better understanding of the economics of SLM.
